Bike Parts, Mountain Bike, and Road Bikes

Bike Parts

Welcome to fittobetriedbikes.com! As our name implies, our web site is all about bikes. Bikes are one of the most common forms of transportation in the world. They can handle terrain a car would be hopelessly outgunned by, they run on human power, and occasionally with the help of a small motor.  But beyond academic interest, we are passionate about bikes here. We’re avid cyclists, and we want to share our love of biking, whether it’s on mountain bikes or road bikes, with you. That’s why we are dedicated to bringing you only the best information about developments in the cycling world. We don’t advocate any brand or product in particular, so we give you just the facts. If you have questions about anything you see here on our site; or if you think a concept should be covered here, please email us. We’ll be happy to answer you, and who knows, your question may even be answered in our FAQ the next time you stop by!

Bikes have been an integral part of our culture ever since their invention in the early 19th century. At the time, people were looking for an alternative to horsepower, and the automobile hadn’t been unveiled yet. The first bikes bore little resemblance to our modern bikes, for one they were missing some key bike parts, such as brakes, or even pedals. People propelled them by walking or running. They could sit in a crude wooden seat and lift their feet to go down hills, but the wheels were made of wood or metal, so the ride was not very smooth.

Pedals were added fairly quickly to bikes, but they were located on the front wheel, which made pedaling and steering quite difficult. Also, the lack of a gear ratio made hills onerous tasks indeed.  It took nearly a century to place the pedals on the frame beneath the seat and connect them to the rear wheel via a chain. It wasn’t until much later that multiple gears and derailers were added. In fact, the first attempt at multiple gears was to put one gear on either side of the rear wheel, and to remove and flip the wheel when you wanted to change gears. This was a far cry from the modern convenience of push button shifting.

Once the 20th century rolled around, an interesting split took place in the biking world. In Europe and Asia, bikes grew as a source of reliable transportation amidst their often cramped streets. They developed and perfected the road bike, which was able to achieve remarkably high speeds on roads. There’s little wonder why the Tour de France is the premier race in the world for road bikes.

In America however, bikes became a leisure activity, and the concept of a cruiser, or even kids bikes became a reality. The American tilt towards leisure also brought us mountain bikes, although they didn’t make an appearance as a product until nearly 1970. Prior to that, mountain bikes were heavily modified cruisers, with beefed up tires and frame reinforcements. Now shops even make specialty mountain bike parts.
